About this tool

A Unix timestamp counts seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970 (the “epoch”). Databases, logs, JWTs and APIs store time this way because it is time-zone-free and easy to compare. JavaScript and many analytics tools use milliseconds instead — 13 digits rather than 10. This converter detects which you pasted automatically.

Why ISO 8601?

The 2026-10-16T08:00:00.000Z format is unambiguous, sorts correctly as text, and is what JSON APIs should exchange. The trailing Z means UTC.

Note on 2038: systems that store timestamps as signed 32-bit integers overflow on 19 January 2038. Modern 64-bit systems are unaffected, but embedded devices and old databases may not be.

Frequently asked questions

Seconds or milliseconds?

10 digits ≈ seconds, 13 digits ≈ milliseconds. We detect it for you.

Why is my converted time off by hours?

You're comparing UTC with local time. Both are shown.

What about leap seconds?

Unix time ignores leap seconds, as do almost all systems.
