About this tool
URLs may only contain a limited set of ASCII characters. Everything else — spaces, ampersands inside values, non-Latin text — must be percent-encoded as % followed by two hex digits (a space becomes %20). Getting this wrong is behind countless broken links, failed API calls and analytics parameters that silently truncate.
Component vs. full URL encoding
Encode component (encodeURIComponent) escapes everything that has meaning in a URL, including / ? & =. Use it for a single query value. Encode full URL (encodeURI) leaves the structural characters intact and only escapes what is illegal — use it on a complete address that already has the right shape.
The Parse URL button splits an address into protocol, host, path, hash and each query parameter, decoded — a fast way to audit tracking links or debug redirects.
Frequently asked questions
Should spaces be %20 or +?
In paths use %20. In HTML form submissions (application/x-www-form-urlencoded) spaces become +. Our decoder handles both.
Why is my URL double-encoded (%2520)?
It was encoded twice — %25 is the encoding of %. Decode once to fix it.
Is the URL sent anywhere?
No, parsing uses your browser's built-in URL API.
